Movies Made From Books: Awesomesauce or Crime Against Humanity?

Ok, by now I am sure everyone and her Auntie Muriel has seen the Hunger Games “teaser” clip that premiered at the VMAs. What, you haven’t? Have you been living under a ROCK?

Here, catch up.

Ok, yeah I’m gonna throw this out there – I was not impressed. Trees? Okay. Fire? Yeah, I guess…but really this clip didn’t make me want to watch the movie so much as protect the book from them meany-bo-beanies in Hollywood who like to ruin the books I love (Looking at you, Cold Mountain!).

So, that got me thinking. Is it okay to plunder every decent book for a so-so movie? Are there any movies that were better than the book? What happened to original screenplays? Is there any more of that Ben and Jerry’s in the freezer? Uh….I digress.

Here are a few movies from books that I really liked and I already gave you one I hated so what about you?

Don’t raise your hand, just shout it out in the comments.

I love to see books turn into movies: if the movie’s great, then it gives me another way to see the book. If the movie sucks, then I have something to complain about. Percy Jackson, I still throw tomatoes at. Scott Pilgrim, I worship (the music, something the book obviously lacked, really helped make the movie).

I have high hopes for the Hunger Games, though. They’re still in the middle of filming, so that teaser isn’t anything to go by. They’ve got a good budget, an unknown for Katniss, and someone I actually like playing Peeta (Josh Hutcherson? Good! Peeta? BAD.)… I loved the novels EXCEPT for the romance. Everything felt unnatural about it – I hope the movie can make up for that. I’m looking forward to it.
