Since I didn’t get any answers to last Friday’s Minute Mystery, I’ll leave it up for another week. Take a look and leave a comment with your best guess!
I also wanted to mention these ghost stories from Ohio libraries. My favorites are the stories from Hinckley Library:
Books left out the night before would sometimes be reshelved, while others (especially Anne Rice novels) would be flung to the floor during the night. Others have felt an odd presence in the upper rooms, occasionally paper clips sail through the air, and a furnace man once saw a ghostly figure on the basement stairs. The ghosts are believed to be those of Orlando Wilcox and his daughter Rebecca (1837–1869), who lived in a cabin on the site before the house was built.
I wouldn’t mind if a ghost wanted to move into the Westerville Public Library and reshelve books!
Have you ever had a ghostly experience, in a library or anywhere else?

You’ve all been told “don’t judge a book by its cover,” meaning don’t assume you know what someone is like by how they look. But here at the library, well, we sometimes DO judge actual books by their cover design! Have you ever done this — picked up (or avoided) a book because of its cover? I have…a lot!
This site lets you look at different book covers and give them a star rating, then see if your rating matches the stars that the book has received from others on Amazon.com. See how many you get right — you may find out it *is* possible to judge a book by its cover!
Do you have any favorite or least-favorite cover designs? I love this one for Wildwood Dancing:

Just in time for Halloween, check this out: a Poe video contest! Scary-story master Edgar Allan Poe will turn 200 in January, and READ magazine is seeking video tributes from those age 18 and younger.
The deadline for this Weekly Reader exclusive video contest is November 21, 2008. Respond with your ghoulish video tribute. Videos should be under 5 minutes in length. Some images that might inspire you: ravens, floorboards, beating hearts, Baltimore, horror, Lenore, red death. 3-5 winners will receive publication of their Poe video tribute in READ magazine’s electronic issue, a monetary reward, and lots of Poe goodies!
Hmmm, 25 days to create a Poe-worthy video? Dare you to try it! Check out some Poe from the Library to get some inspiration!

After a looooong break (sorry about that!), the Friday Minute Mysteries are back!
A man walks into a bar and asks for a drink. The bartender pulls out a gun and points it at him. The man says, “Thank you,” and walks out.
What happened? Leave a comment with your theory!
(If you happen to be old enough to remember the last mystery I posted (yeah, it was a while back), the answer is: The room is the ballroom of a sunken ocean liner. The rays are manta rays. The man ran out of air while scuba diving in the shipwreck. al guessed it! Go, al!)

Alert reader (thanks, Dave Barry, for that phrase) and guest blogger Novelwriter65 discovered the web site Flamingnet Book Reviews.
Flamingnet’s mission is to promote reading among young adults; making reading more fun by highlighting books that young adults may enjoy and fostering literacy through charitable work.
Its founder was only in 5th grade when he started writing book reviews, and you too can apply on the site to be a Student Reviewer for Flamingnet!
If book reviewing’s your thing, don’t forget you can also post reviews on the WPL web site by clicking “Write a Review” on the left of any item that you find in the catalog. Post early and post often — we love to hear from you! You can also find the Library and many of our librarians posting to www.goodreads.com.
Thanks, Novelwriter65, for the tip!

Have you ever said “that’s so gay!”? Or heard your friends saying it? The site ThinkB4YouSpeak.com challenges you to say something that’s original, unique, and not negative. The English language is huge, so show off your vocab and express your opinion without dissing a whole group of people!
Also, never underestimate the power of an invented word (talk about unique!). I give points to “awesometastic” and “craptacular.”
Got any other ideas for replacing “that’s so gay”? Comment me!

Check it out — with the World’s Smallest Postal Service, you write a short letter (up to 6 sentences), and it will be transcribed onto tiny stationary and put into a teeny, tiny envelope! It costs a little more than a stamp, but still, imagine getting one in the mail!

Just came across this article from Yahoo News: “Baggy pants ban ‘unconstitutional,’ rules US judge.”
A 17-year-old spent a night in jail last week after police arrested him for wearing low pants in Riviera Beach, southeast Florida.
The law banning so-called “saggy pants” was approved by city voters in March after supporters of the bill collected nearly 5,000 signatures to put the measure on the ballot.
What do you think? Do you think the police should get involved in people’s fashion? Do you think people should be allowed to wear their pants as low as they want, even if others think a little *too much* shows? Leave a comment!
