Research Pro Enhanced!

Default resources have been narrowed to only 5 in order to improve performance when retrieving results. You should be able to perform faster searches without waiting long periods of time.

This is one of a series of initiatives we are working in collaboration with III (Innovative Interfaces Inc) to enhance Research Pro’s capabilities to our work-flow needs.

Please go ahead and test the new set of resources. As always your feedback is greatly appreciated.

Program Registration Enhancements

New enhancements will address some of the critical issues we have been experiencing.  Busy records, additional  registrations with one card, and multiple registration at the same time are some of the issues addressed with this enhancement. Visual layout will change as well.

The installation for these fixes will take place on July 12th.

New website on June 11th!

As many of you know, we have been working for some time on a new redesign for our library main site (www.westervilelibrary.org). On Monday June 11th the new site will replace the current one bringing along the way several features for our patrons and staff as well. Among other features the new site will include:

Customizable Interface : Users will have the ability to pick the colors, font size and even orientation in which information is displayed based on the provided options on the top navigation bar of the website.

The library goes mobile: As technology evolves it is important to move along with it. It is for that reason that a PDA version has been created to expand our services to a wider audience. What does that mean? It means you can search the catalog, check your account, reserve and even renew materials from your PDA device.

Blog Implemantation: I am sure you have seen blogs on the internet weather is for homework, news, research or else. As part of the Web 2.0 philosophy the library has implemented 5 blogs (Director, Teens, Adult Services, Summer Reading Program and Support Services) to the services we provide to online users and staff as well. This initiative will allow the library to build a larger community online, promote more interaction with patrons and online users through the use of comments and much more…

Encore Update

We will be getting some updates on our Encore testing catalog. Listed below are the main features you’ll notice:

  1. Improved 856 link presentation, including using the label text if provided for the link instead of just showing the URL
  2. ERM resource license information is shown in the record details display
  3. Program section information is shown in the record details display
  4. A “More Resources” link has been added to Federated Search component
  5. The Links heading on the record details display is now behaving itself
  6. The spacing in the Resource display in results has been tightened up
  7. Toggle links (e.g. Show All n Copies) now have the appropriate cursor when moused over and you can click on the text or the little triangle

As we work on the internal preview set, please keep working with the
features and let us know if you find a critical problem which prevents
their use and which doesn’t clear up within an hour or two (or which is recurrent across multiple sessions).

Encore Preview is here!!!

We finally got green light to offer a sneak preview at what encore can do. Currently, encore can only be tested inside the library which means we can not advertise it as we would normally do. However, in the upcoming weeks we are hoping to offer Encore to a wider audience outside the library.

A web survey form has been placed underneath the Encore logo. Please click on it and tell us about your experience with it. Your feedback will help us in providing feedback to Encore’s development team back in sunny California. The url is:

http://www.westervillelibrary.org/encore/survey_form.htm

Please let patrons know about Encore and encourage the use of it as it will eventually be part of your tool kit in providing resources to users.

Questions and/or comments? Post it here on the blog…

RSS for program registration?

We are exploring options at creating a list for upcoming programs and then generate an xml file. If you’re not familiar with XML or RSS you can take a look at:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RSS_(file_format)

for detailed information.

The current obstacle is the way program records are being saved (as a genre rather than a bib type record). I will be contacting III to find out if there is a work around for this. In the mean time if you know of some way to Create a List from Genre type records and/or how to convert those records into bib records then I would like to talk to you.

Graphical user interface (GUI) for Staffipedia?

We are exploring options to integrate a graphical user interface into our staff wiki, Staffipedia. We will be loading a experimental wiki in which we will be testing plugins and extensions of code without jeopardizing the time and effort staff has already put into staffipedia. Think of it as a testing environment where if things get broken it won’t affect our main wiki.

Once we have a version loaded into this environment we will be providing a link for you to check and give us feedback on new add-ons before they are integrated into production.

In the meantime, if you have ideas or comments on things you would like to see implemented on the wiki please comment to this post. A example of wiki extensions can be found at:
